Newsflash: we've been doing that since we first started sending sattelites up there. There are thousands of pieces of "junk" up there that are actually being monitored down to sizes of about 4 inches.

The speed of light isn't a variable, it's a constant (in a vacuum) and is hence referred to as "C" in equations that use it (as in E=MC2). In that famous equation, E and M are the variables, with C being the constant. The speed of light in a vaccum is 186000 miles per second.

Mission Control is in Houston because of Lyndom B. Johnson, the democrat VP of JFK, who oversaw the space program during its infancy. The only reason republicans were on board then is because it wasn't about science, it was about beating the Russians.
